On the Occasion of Our Small Gatherings is a series of hooked rugs that look like iPhone text messages with phrases in Anishinaabemowin; messages that can be read as simultaneously serious, political, light-hearted, and social. In Anishinaabe ways, the more something is shared, the greater its value becomes. I think this applies to our language as well. This series references the ways in which language is being shared through Facebook, iMessage, sms texts, and email but also alludes to a near future in which our languages are spoken and texted, as regularly and casually as English.
